Three-dimensional Sound, or immersive sound as it is also called, is a new and exciting field, with many opportunities for creative work with sound. With tools such as Reaper and Ambisonics plugins you can easily get started with advanced work. Immersive sound can seem complicated, and the idea behind this course is to teach the participants simple and good ways to work with it.

Individual guidance will be given along the way, and if the participants have questions and ideas of their own, we can solve this together.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The goal of the course
The aim of the course is to provide a simple and basic overview of immersive sound, so that the participants can produce their own works after completing the course. The course will also make you qualified to work in Notam’s Studio 3. The course requires no prior knowledge, but some knowledge of audio software is an advantage.

The course provides basic training both in Reaper and Ambisonics plugins, as well as the artistic side of working with immersive sound. Participants gain an understanding of working with immersive sound, and this will be useful for people who work with, for example, sound engineering, music, composition, installations, and sound design.

After completing the course, you will have a good basis for further work with immersive sound. If there is sufficient demand, Notam will launch a follow-up course after this course.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Immersive sound, Reaper, Ambisonics, and Studio 3
Technical solutions for working with immersive sound have existed since the 1930s, but it is only recently that the tools have become readily available and easy to use. With modern solutions for immersive sound, many new possibilities for creative sound work open up, and it is easy to learn the basic techniques.

Reaper is Notam’s preferred digital audio workstation (DAW) for working with immersive sound. In Reaper, you can easily work with multichannel files in ways not available in other programs. This is one of the things that makes Reaper particularly suitable for working with immersive sound. Reaper is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Ambisonics is a full-sphere immersive sound format which, in addition to the horizontal plane, also covers sound sources above and below the listener. In contrast to other multi-channel immersive sound formats, you do not need to define the number of speakers in the mix but choose this during playback. This makes it a flexible format that can work in everything from simple to complex systems. There are also specialized microphones for Ambisonics, and all in all it is an effective and practical format for advanced work with three-dimensional sound.

Immersive sound is an important area of interest for Notam, and central to this work is Notam’s Studio 3. Notam’s Studio 3 is an immersive sound studio with 24 speakers in a hemisphere with a diameter of four meters. The room is planned and built based on acoustic considerations. The walls are absorbent with replaceable surfaces, and the room is calibrated to achieve a smooth frequency response.
Studio 3 is ideal for working with techniques such as Ambisonics.

Read more about Reaper, Ambisonics, and Studio 3 here:
https://www.reaper.fm/
https://www.asoundeffect.com/ambisonics-primer/
https://notam.no/studio/studio-3/
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

About the teacher
Mariam Gviniashvili (b.1989) is an Oslo-based composer, sound artist and video artist from Georgia.
