On Saturday 25 January 2025, Nuts and Bolts will conduct a workshop in Ambisonics here at Notam.
In this workshop you will work with surround sound and Ambisonics. In part one, there will be an introduction to the theory and some historical perspectives. There will be a review of Ambisonics and a deconstruction of the theory, so you can get an understanding of why it is useful, when it can be used and what makes it so powerful.
In part two of the workshop there will be more practical work. Using Reaper and the IEM plugin suite, the participants will create some sketches that will be played back in a 24.1 speaker setup. By the end of the workshop, participants will have created an Ambisonics project based on the basic elements and be ready to experiment further with surround sound.
The workshop is led by Mariam Gviniashvili. Gviniashvili is a composer and sound artist specialising in broadcast sound. Gviniashvili's work encompasses electroacoustic music, audiovisual media and instrumental collaborations - with a focus on broadcast sound. Gviniashvili's work has been presented at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including Ars Electronica, Beast Feast, MA/IN, Heroines of Sound, Ultima Festival, ZKM, CCRMA, ZiMMT, IEM, Virginia Tech, EMPAC and more.
