Welcome to the live meet-up for artists working with technology here at Notam! October 7th, our host, Mariam Gviniashvili, will be joined by Jan Wiese with the presentation Plastic Ecology - Creating the Conditions for Musical Education.

The presentation begins with a demonstration of The Extended Instrument vol. I and II - an electroacoustic performance practice in which oboe, English horn, MIDI controllers, sensors, computer, Ableton Live and Zwobot software, visuals and performance space interact in real time. Rather than treating electronics as an additional tool controlled by the performer, the focus is on the relationships between these elements and on how they continually influence and modify one another. This practical experience provides a starting point for considering musical form as formation: an ongoing process rather than simply a predetermined structure.

Here, feedback means more than acoustic feedback. What happens within the system becomes part of the conditions for what happens next. Reciprocal interaction describes the resulting exchange of influence: the performer shapes the system, while the system also shapes the performer’s subsequent actions. Plastic Ecology proposes that musical form can emerge through such interactions within an ecology of human, technological, social and environmental relations. The presentation asks what this perspective might imply for improvisation, composition and the role of the composer.

Jan Wiese
Since the early 1980s, Jan Wiese has performed in United States and Europe as a soloist with live electronics. He is regarded as a pioneer of electroacoustic improvisation, having over the years shaped a diverse and experimental artistic language that brings together contemporary jazz, oboe, live electronics, ambient, noise, electronica, and contemporary art. In recent years, this ongoing artistic process has expanded to include video and interactive visuals controlled by gesture sensors, presented in the recent concert productions The Extended Instrument Vol. 1 and The Extended Instrument Vol. 2. The Extended Instrument, Vol. 1 and The Extended Instrument Vol. 2.

These meet-ups are led by composer Mariam Gviniashvili. Mariam Gviniashvili is a sound artist and composer who combines electronics, electroacoustics and 3D sound with visual material, dance and performance to penetrate the physical and emotional essence of sound and space.
