Notam’s Max and Pd meet-ups are a gathering place for anyone interested in programming with Max and Pd. It is an informal get-together where users of Max and Pd can share ideas, projects and techniques, or simply help one another.
Meeting ID for Max & Pd: 961 8668 2482

Pure Data (Pd) is a visual programming language developed by Miller Puckette in the 1990s to create interactive electronic music and multimedia works. Pd is an open-source project with a large developer community working on new extensions. It can run on Linux, macOS, iOS, Android and Windows.
Max is a visual programming environment for creating art, multimedia, sound and music, developed by the company Cycling ’74. It is one of the most popular tools for creating all kinds of digital art and has been an industry standard since the 1990s.
Whether you’re interested in programming interactive design, music, sound or images, this event is for you.

Aleksander Tidemann – Networked music and audio synchronization projects
Aleksander is a senior engineer and lecturer in music technology at the Department of Musicology, University of Oslo. His work and main interests lie at the intersection of sound, software, and science, often involving audio programming, networked sound, and studio production. Outside of work, he plays drums and electronics with various Oslo-based bands, produces some music for film/TV and mixed-media artworks, and tries to read a little bit every day.
This Friday, Aleksander will talk about a few of his networked music and audio synchronization projects and how writing blog posts and teaching have made him a much better Max/Pd developer.
To find out more about his projects, take a look at https://aleksati.net, a portfolio and blog where he shares projects and writes about his adventures in music technology.

Vincenzo Madaghiele – Two experiments of minimal musical agents
Vincenzo Madaghiele is a musician, computational artist and researcher based in Oslo, Norway. He works on music improvisation with autonomous systems, combining generative musical processes with a focus on dynamic and textural relations. His practice involves improvised music performances, audiovisual works, installations and interactive dance, frequently collaborating with other artists. He has performed and presented installations across Europe, in venues like Kunsternes Hus, Fylkingen, Gaudeamus Festival, Milan Design Week and Myriad festival. He is currently a doctoral researcher in music technology at the department of musicology, University of Oslo, where he investigates the design of artificial musical agents for performance and improvisation from a technical and aesthetic point of view.
In this talk, he will discuss two experiments of minimal musical agents for live performance. The first system is MAAL (Multi-Agent Autonomous Looper), a system composed of several rule-based agents that listen to each other and sample a live musician, developing a musical structure over time. The second system is a work-in-progress idea called “vm.samplecrawler~", a granular sampler that navigates a corpus of sounds and modulates itself based on its own curiosity. They are both developed in PD with flucoma, the first one also using a backend Python server.

These meetings are chaired by Bálint Laczkó, a composer and music technologist who has been an enthusiastic Max user since version 5. He actively uses the programme to create algorithmic compositions and visual expressions in real time, to build up and deconstruct sounds, and to position sound in space via loudspeaker systems. He holds master’s degrees in composition (both classical and electroacoustic music) as well as a PhD in music technology.
