Presentations on 13 October: Jobina Tinnemans and Leonie Roessler

Jobina Tinnemans is a composer at the nexus of electronic and contemporary classical music, writing for ensemble, voice and solo performers, both in conventional and cross-discipline instrumentation. In 2007, she moved from the Netherlands to a remote headland in Pembrokeshire, Wales, in order to concentrate on composing. This encounter with a vast landscape, dominated by the feral rhythms of the weather, the seasons and the sea, has inspired all her subsequent work, after a decade spent on-location and now reimagined from her London studio.

Tinnemans’ work reached an international audience when she was commissioned by the prestigious MATA 2013 festival in New York to write a work for ensemble and performers on custom-designed virtual instruments she coined field instruments, knitting together a natural soundscape in which strings determine time rather than pitch. This bold mix of disciplines made it to the Vogue NYC 2016 gala show for a subsequent performance. Similar bold combinations can be found throughout her career, from landscape-sized graphic scores and the use of extinct languages to a lighthouse becoming a giant metronome.

Tinnemans’ cross-disciplinary works inform the sound worlds she creates in works for ensemble and soloists. Her first album, Five Thoughts On Everything, was reviewed as “a disc to die for” by The Whole Note. With Salomé (2019), written for pianist Vicky Chow and performed at John Zorn’s The Stone in NYC, and Seven Sisters (2021), Tinnemans returns to her piano roots. Inspired by mythical legends, these works are a commentary on the lack of identity these famous women are given. Following multiple international performances, Fidan Aghayeva-Edler recorded these seven works for her double album Elements & Jasmine Petals, released by Salomé Records in early 2026. Tinnemans’ most recent piano work, a set of thirteen pieces inspired by the artwork of Bridget Riley, is aptly called Riley (2026) and is awaiting release. She is currently working on an opera in collaboration with The National Archives in London, introduced by the cycle Songs That Never Come Ashore for soprano, piano and cello.

Leonie Roessler is a composer and performer based in The Hague, Netherlands. She captures her environment with field recordings, which she uses for radio pieces, sound installations and instrumental compositions. Part of her work is purely sound-based; however, the theme of marginalization has become increasingly present in her radio works. She co-founded the Iranian record label Noise à Noise with Soheil Soheili and organises BUG Radio and the On Air – On Site Festival with Margherita Brillada. She is part of LOOS The Hague. Her works have been released through Musica Dispersa (ES/UK), Noise à Noise (IR), Biodiversitàs, Syrphe (DE) and Antilounge (NL), and have been physically archived in the British Library.

Roessler teaches classical guitar, piano and composition at Vivaldi Music School in The Hague three days a week. She has also taught field-recording workshops at the Limited Access Festival in Tehran and Isfahan, The Story of Space Festival in India, and the Islamic Azad University of Fine Arts in Tehran, among other places.
