On 28 November there will be a process screening of "(I need to talk to) English Speakers" by Moribund Performance in the project room at Notam. Moribund Performance consists of Sara Hamming with Sue Hansen-Styles.
(I need to talk to) English Speakers is a live in-the-making version of the sound work English Speakers from 2019 with script and sound choreography by Sara Hamming, and compositions by Anja Jacobsen and Lil Lacy. English Speakers is a sound work made entirely of voice material, produced in collaboration with Notam and performed by 9 speakers - 9 English-speaking - with one central narrative voice that alternately moves between and flows into all the speakers. A personification of the "world language" English as a British female voice.
In this performative live version of English Speakers the sound work and performer enter into dialogue. The performer will interact with the voices in the work, moving them to a bodily level with gestures and body sounds. The live performance builds a double critique into the work, initiated in English Speakers. What does the pre-recorded sound work project onto the performer - as a medium for the language of English? How is the language used by the narrator, frozen in universalism and pre-recorded phrases, turned against herself.
(I need to talk to) English Speakers is a living poem, a shimmering wordplay between a body and a voice.
