In this concert we explore improvisation with artificial musical agents. An artificial musical agent is a computer program that listens to a musician’s live sound, and responds by controlling a sound synthesizer. The concert consists of four sessions in which solo musicians co-improvise with live computational musical agents they trained using selected recordings of their own performances. 

The concert present SCSCI (synthesizer control system for co-improvisation), a new software system developed at the University of Oslo, for the first time in a public performance. SCSCI is developed with support of the Department of Musicology at University of Oslo, and MishMash center for AI and creativity.

 Petter Asbjørnsen is an active composer and bass player in various jazz groups. He is also engaged in various underground pop- and rock- groups, and experimental music. After finishing his bachelor’s degree at Griegakademiet, he spent some time in Berlin before he started at a master’s degree at Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen. He finished this degree in 2019. 

 Andrea Giordano is a musician based in Oslo. As composer, improviser and singer, she develops her language through two main fields: Piedmontese dialect and hyper-instrumentation. She works on her solo work, based on voice samples, while also leading her large ensemble Àlea (SOFA), performing with the quartet FRANTX (Carton), collaborating with visual artist Kjell Bjørgeengen, with duos with Toshimaru Nakamura, Eivind Lønning, and Kalle Moberg (Black Truffle). She is also composing for Asamisimasa, Nmh Sinfonietta, and Arepo, and curates the music label SOFA.

 Elena Perales Andreu is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes performance, improvisation, composition, and visual art. Her work is informed by the examination of psychological constructs, the idea of community, the interconnection of contrasting artistic fields, and the implication of ritual practices. As a clarinet performer, Elena is active in the contemporary and experimental music scene, guiding her own projects as well as taking part in different festivals.

 Stefanos Skialivas is an artist and music technologist based in Reykjavík, working at the intersection of interface development and performance. With a background in engineering mathematics and music technology, he builds DIY interfaces for interaction with neural audio synthesis, feedback systems and physical modelling. He collaborates as a research engineer with the Intelligent Instruments Lab and the ACUTE Research Lab at the University of Iceland. 

 Vincenzo Madaghiele is a musician and researcher working on improvisation with algorithmic techniques. He combines sound-generating processes from various sources into feedback systems focusing on dynamic and textural relations. He is currently a doctoral researcher in musicology at the University of Oslo, where he investigates the design and application of autonomous systems in music improvisation.
