Software for mixing

Mix is a 9-track disk-based mix program originally for Silicone Graphics, ported to Mac OSX by Brad Garton.

Audio files in stereo, mono or quad can be placed on 9 tracks, preferably several sounds on top of each other on the same track. The sounds are mixed directly from disk in real time so that the requirements for memory capacity is minimal. Each track has a fader that one can operate during playback. Enveloper and pan curves can be drawn on each track. In addition to being dragged around by the mouse, the sounds are placed by setting the start time points numerically. A special scripting languages can be used for algorithmic mixing. Mix also has a number of effects that work in real time: chorus, Harmonizer, filters, ring modulator, echo, reverb.
Mix does not have as many features as Protools and other major systems, but the program is easy and fast to use. Mix filling a key position in the interaction with other applications on SGI machines, and did SGI a convenient workstation for computer music.

Mix is designed and programmed by Øyvind Hammer and later maintained by Kjetil S. Matheussen.
