Talk with Eduardo Miranda – On composition and eavesdropping on a listening brain

The Brazilian composer and researcher Eduardo Miranda is currently on a residency at Notam to work on a project in collaboration with Anders Vinjar and Ellen Røed. On Monday May 12, he will hold a presentation of this work at Notam at 6 p.m., as part of the series Notam Forum with SkRR.

Eduardo Miranda is known for his research on computer music, especially related to artificial intelligence and human-machine interfaces. The composition he is currently developing at Notam is a chamber orchestra piece for 24 musicians. The result will be purely instrumental, but the compositional method applies state of the art technology. The music will be based on fMRI brain scans of the composer himself listening to the second movement of Beethoven’s 7th symphony. The method consists in deconstructing the music to its fundamental components, and then rearranging the elements using computer-aided composition software from IRCAM. In connection with the performance there will also be shown video art with the same conceptual vantage point as the composition.
