Exhibition at the National Museum – Architecture

Notam is currently collaborating with the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, the architectural firm Atelier Oslo, and the Department of Education at the University of Oslo in a research project on VR technology in the dissemination of digitally created architecture and sound in virtual realities. The project aims to contribute new approaches to architectural exhibitions and audience experiences, through exploration of the relationship between virtual and physical elements, and implementation of natural and virtual sound and acoustics.

Notam’s contribution is provided by Jøran Rudi, Thom Johansen and Bálint Laczkó. By adapting electronic acoustics to the artificial environment they are developing knowledge about how physical and virtual acoustics in the exhibition rooms interact, which delivery methods yield the best results and which quality requirements need to be set for the simulations in order for them to be effective. In their work, they use both well-known tools for signal processing and new custom-made adaptions.

Skogen i huset. Utforsking av parallelle virkeligheter
The forest in the house. Exploring parallel realities
February 24, 2018-18. March 2018
The National Museum – Architecture

The exhibition offers an experience of virtual and physical architecture, with associated acoustics and sound. In addition to the surrounding viewing experience seen through the VR glasses, the exhibition opens for adventure through movement, hearing and touch. Skogen i huset is part of a research project on VR technology in the dissemination of digitally created architecture. The project aims to contribute to new thinking about architectural exhibitions and the audience’s experiences, through exploration of the relationship between virtual and physical elements, and implementation of natural and virtual sound and acoustics.

Skogen i huset. Utforsking av parallelle virkeligheter is an interdisciplinary collaboration between
• Architect: Thomas Liu, Atelier Oslo As
• VR Developer: Ole Petter Larsen, Atelier Oslo, AS
• Audio researcher and developers: Jøran Rudi, Thom Johansen and Balint Laczko, Notam
• Curator of the exhibition and researcher: Birgitte Sauge, National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design
• Curator of the dissemination and researcher: Anne Qvale, National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design
• Researchers: Rolf Steier and Palmyre Pierroux, University of Oslo
